What Makes Cozumel’s Avocados So Irresistible?

Cozumel’s Municipal Market (Mercado Municipal) is a maze of booths where chefs can purchase local pork, Caribbean pargo fish, jicama, and exotic fruits such as milky purple caimito or fudge-like zapote negro. Markets are an integral part of Mexican town life; Cozumel’s is no different.
Avocado is a classic staple in Mexican cuisine, due to its delicious and nutritionally dense properties. Perfect for dips, salads and side dishes alike. Packed full of Vitamin B6, C & E and healthy fats which satiate without increasing caloric intake too significantly, avocado makes an excellent snack choice.
Mexico is widely known as one of the world’s leading producers and exporters of avocados, making them one of the main components of popular Mexican dish, guacamole (which has also become an American favorite).
Avocados can be used in more ways than guacamole, from topping off bowls of soup or salsa to adding an avocado cream cheese topping. Their rich potassium content makes them an excellent option for diabetics or people on low-carb diets.
Chirimoyas (or Chirimoya nisperos), native to China and shaped like small footballs with two or three large seeds inside, are another delicious Mexican fruit to try. Very sweet in taste, they can even be enjoyed just like apple slices!
Chirimoyas are at their peak from January to June and can be found in most supermarkets throughout the region. Not only can they add extra vitamins and minerals to your diet, they’re also packed full of antioxidants!
Prickly pear fruits can be found all throughout late summer. Oval-shaped with crunchy textures and boasting an array of colors ranging from green, orange and burgundy hues – this gem makes an impressive sight!
Kiwis are tropical fruit that come in red, yellow and green varieties and make an excellent source of Vitamin C – particularly beneficial for those suffering from diabetes or high blood pressure.
Cozumel boasts many other fruits to indulge in as well, with mamey sapote — an edible winter fruit that looks similar to avocado and pomegranate — being another delicious option. Plus, this tasty treat provides Vitamin A, which is vital for eye health and vision. It is a wonderful treat for kids, too! It makes an excellent snack or dessert!
